Description
Homemade chocolate chip cookies, featuring a secret ingredient — ground oats! These cookies are irresistibly chewy, packed with chocolate, and always a crowd favorite.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups (225g) rolled oats (Old Fashioned)
- 1 3/4 cups (248g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened but still slightly firm
- 1 cup (215g) dark brown sugar
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 (4 oz.) milk chocolate bar, chopped
- 1 1/2 cups (170g) chopped walnuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners.
- Add oats to a food processor and process until finely ground, almost like flour (about 2-3 minutes).
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together ground oats, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until well combined.
- Mix in eggs one at a time, then blend in vanilla extract.
- With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until nearly combined.
- Stir in chocolate chips, chopped milk chocolate, and walnuts (if using). Optionally, reserve a few chocolate chips to press into the tops of the cookies for a decorative touch.
- Scoop about 2 oz. of dough (nearly 1/4 cup) and shape into balls. Place dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spaced about 3 inches apart. Refrigerate dough that is not being baked immediately.
- Bake cookies in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, until they are slightly underbaked and the edges are golden brown.
- Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Repeat with remaining dough. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container.
Notes
For best results, slightly underbake the cookies and let them finish setting on the baking sheet. Use unsalted butter for better control over the saltiness. If walnuts are omitted, the nutritional info will vary.
