Description
This is our family’s all-time favorite French toast recipe! It’s easy to make, and the vanilla cream custard is absolutely delicious. Use day-old bread for the best results.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large eggs
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 8 slices day-old bread, 1-inch-thick
- 3 tablespoons butter, plus more for serving
- Optional toppings: Powdered sugar, maple syrup, berries, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with foil. Place in the oven to keep cooked French toast warm.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla extract, and salt until well blended.
- Arrange bread slices in a large baking dish. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, flipping and moving them around to soak up the custard.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large pan over medium-low heat. Cook soaked bread slices in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Transfer cooked French toast to the oven while cooking the remaining slices.
Notes
Use thick, slightly stale bread like brioche, French, Italian, or challah for the best texture. To keep French toast warm, store cooked slices in a low-temperature oven while finishing the rest.
