Ingredients

For the Arepas:

  • 2 cups Pre-Cooked Corn Meal (white or yellow)
  • 2 cups Warm Water
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 ounces Mozzarella Cheese (Shredded, Optional)
  • Vegetable Oil (for cooking)

Instructions

Directions:

  • Step 1: Mix the Dough - In a mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add the warm water, stirring with a fork or your hands until a soft dough forms. If you’re using mozzarella cheese, mix it in at this stage. The dough should be moist but not sticky.
  • Step 2: Shape the Arepas - Divide the dough into equal portions, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a disc about ½ inch thick. Make sure the edges are smooth to prevent cracking during cooking.
  • Step 3: Cook the Arepas - Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a little vegetable oil. Once hot, place the arepas in the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and have a slight crust.
  • Step 4: Finish Cooking - Transfer the arepas to a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes to ensure they are cooked through, especially if cheese is added.
  • Step 5: Serve and Enjoy - Remove the arepas from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Slice them open and fill them with your favorite ingredients. Enjoy them warm!
