Begin by combining 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in ½ cup of Grand Marnier. Allow this syrup to cool slightly.
In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of mascarpone cheese. Using a whisk or electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy. Gradually add ½ cup of the cooled sugar syrup to the mascarpone, mixing until well combined. If you like, fold in a small amount of whipped cream for extra lightness.
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the Grand Marnier syrup, ensuring they are soaked but not overly soggy. Place them in a single layer at the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the soaked ladyfingers. Add a layer of mixed fresh berries on top. Repeat the process with another layer of dipped ladyfingers, followed by the remaining mascarpone mixture and another layer of berries.
Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best flavor. This allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to set properly.
Just before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with cocoa powder for a finishing touch. Use a serving spatula to slice and serve, ensuring each piece has a beautiful layer of berries and mascarpone.
