Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef preferably 80/20 for juiciness
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1 whole tomato sliced
  • lettuce leaves

Instructions

Prepare the Patties

  • Start by placing the ground beef into a large mixing bowl. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Gently mix the ingredients together with your hands or a spoon until the seasonings are evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork the meat as this can lead to tough burgers.

Shape the Patties

  • Divide the seasoned beef into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a round patty about ¾-inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb—this helps the burgers cook evenly and prevents them from puffing up too much.

Cook the Burgers

  • Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on one side without moving them. Flip the patties, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each, and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the cheese melts and the burgers reach your desired doneness.

Prepare the Sauce

  • While the patties cook, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard in a small bowl. Mix well until smooth. This sauce is what makes the Copycat Steak And Shake Burger truly special, offering a creamy and tangy contrast to the savory meat.

Toast the Buns

  • Slice the hamburger buns in half and toast them lightly on the skillet or grill for about a minute until golden brown. Toasting adds a nice crunch and prevents the buns from getting soggy once assembled.

Assemble the Burgers

  • Spread a generous amount of the sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Add a few lettuce leaves, then place the cheesy burger patty on top. Add diced onions and a slice of tomato, then finish with the top bun. Serve immediately for best results.

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Large Skillet
  • Grill Pan
  • Small Bowl

Notes

  • Use ground beef with 80/20 fat content for juicier burgers.
  • Avoid pressing down on patties while cooking to retain juices.
  • Make the thumb indentation in patties to help them cook evenly and avoid puffing.
  • Customize the sauce with smoked paprika or hot sauce for extra flavor.
  • Lightly butter buns before toasting to enhance flavor and texture.
