Ingredients

  • 8 ounces pasta (shells or penne)
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes undrained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add 8 ounces of pasta shells or penne and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Step 2: Brown the Beef and Sauté Aromatics

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Step 3: Build the Tomato Sauce

  • Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices and the tomato sauce. Stir in dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 10 minutes to meld the flavors.

Step 4: Add the Cream

  • Lower the heat and slowly stir in 1 cup of heavy cream. This step transforms the sauce into a rich, velvety base that coats the pasta beautifully. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until heated through.

Step 5: Combine Pasta and Sauce

  • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and gently toss to combine, ensuring every piece is coated with the creamy beef and tomato sauce.

Step 6: Assemble the Bake

  • Transfer the pasta mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the top, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.

Step 8: Garnish and Serve

  • Remove the pasta bake from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and fresh flavor. Serve warm and enjoy!

Equipment

  • Large Pot
  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Mixing spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking dish (around 9x13 inches)
  • Oven mitts

Notes

  • Allow the pasta bake to cool 10-15 minutes before serving to let the sauce thicken for easier slicing.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat covered in the oven or in the microwave to restore creamy texture without drying out.
