Ingredients

  • 1 box puff pastry sheets high-quality frozen
  • 1 large egg for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon water for egg wash
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Start by thawing your puff pastry sheets according to the package instructions. Once thawed, gently roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to ensure even thickness, aiming for about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Using a round cutter, cut out circles from the dough, minimizing leftover scraps. Use a smaller round cutter to create the classic doughnut shape.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the large egg and 1 tablespoon of water to make the egg wash for a golden color when fried.
  • Heat vegetable oil in your frying pan or deep fryer over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), the perfect frying temperature.
  • Carefully place a few cronuts in the hot oil, frying each side for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to flip them gently.
  • Remove the cronuts from the oil and place them on a cooling rack to drain excess oil. Dust with powdered sugar while still warm.
  • Serve your freshly made cronuts warm to eager friends and family. Enjoy the delightful layers and sweet, crispy exterior!

Equipment

  • Frying pan or deep fryer
  • Rolling Pin
  • Round Cutter
  • Slotted spoon
  • Cooling rack

Notes

  • Consider filling your cronuts with flavored creams or custards for a special treat.
  • Experiment with different toppings like chocolate glaze or fruit preserves.
  • For a lighter version, bake the cronuts instead of frying them.
