Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F to activate yeast)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey (for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for the perfect texture)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for richness)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for the water bath)
  • 1 each egg (beaten for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ground sea salt (for the finishing touch)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, honey, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • Once the yeast is activated, add the salt, olive oil, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined, then gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Divide into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a round bun. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Cover the buns with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • In a medium pot, bring 8 cups of water to a gentle boil. Stir in the brown sugar.
  • Carefully drop 2-3 buns into the boiling water for about 30 seconds on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and return to the baking sheet.
  • Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg, then sprinkle with dried minced onion, dried minced garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and ground sea salt.
  • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown. Let them cool slightly before serving.
