Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1/3 pound sharp yellow cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 3/4 cup garlic herb butter (melted)
  • Olive oil (for greasing surfaces)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water and 1 tablespoon of honey. Stir until the honey dissolves, then sprinkle 2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast over the top. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 3 cups of bread flour to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough begins to form.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it's too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
  • Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil, place the dough inside, and cover it with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.
  • Using a sharp knife, make vertical cuts in the bread about 1 inch apart, being careful not to cut all the way through the bottom.
  • Between each cut, insert shredded cheese—using 1/3 pound of sharp yellow cheddar cheese or your preferred cheese.
  • Brush the melted garlic herb butter generously over the top and in between the cuts, ensuring each slice gets coated.
  • Cover the bread with a towel again and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with more garlic herb butter if desired, and enjoy the ooey-gooey goodness with your favorite dishes!
