Ingredients

  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup cooked and diced turkey or chicken
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Cook the Pasta

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until just al dente — about 7 to 8 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside. Rinse with warm water to stop cooking and prevent sticking.

Prepare the Cheese Sauce

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.

Add Cheese and Seasonings

  • Lower the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and smooth. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.

Combine Pasta, Meat, and Sauce

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained macaroni, cooked diced turkey or chicken, and cheese sauce. Mix until pasta is evenly coated and meat is distributed.

Assemble and Bake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer macaroni mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Mix breadcrumbs with grated Parmesan cheese and sprinkle evenly over the top. Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes until topping is golden and sauce is bubbling.

Serve

  • Let the pasta cool for about 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set for easier scooping. Enjoy!
