Ingredients

  • 16 oz ribeye steak thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil divided
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices American white cheese
  • 2 soft hoagie buns

Instructions

  • Start by placing your ribeye steak in the freezer for about 30 minutes. This will make it easier to slice thinly. Once slightly firm, remove it from the freezer and slice it against the grain into thin strips.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are soft and caramelized. Once done, remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the skillet, seasoning it with salt and pepper. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the steak is browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
  • Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the cooked steak. Mix well to combine the flavors, allowing everything to heat through for an additional minute.
  • Reduce the heat to low and lay the slices of American cheese over the steak and onion mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt. Let it sit for about 2-3 minutes.
  • While the cheese is melting, slice your hoagie buns down the middle (but not all the way through). Once the cheese is gooey and melty, use a spatula to scoop the steak and onion mixture into the buns. Serve immediately and enjoy your Homemade Philly Cheesesteak while it’s hot!
