Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter for flavor and texture
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced adds sweetness and depth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced enhances overall flavor
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour for thickening
  • 2 cups milk whole milk preferred for creaminess
  • 4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded provides bold flavor

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the sautéed onions and garlic. Stir constantly for about 1-2 minutes to cook the flour, creating a roux that will thicken your cheese sauce.
  • Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble gently.
  • Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded cheddar cheese, stirring until completely melted and smooth. If too thick, add more milk to reach desired consistency.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. You can add a pinch of salt, pepper, or cayenne for extra kick!
  • Transfer your nacho cheese sauce to a serving bowl and serve warm with tortilla chips. Enjoy!

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or whisk

  • Cheese Grater
