Ingredients

  • 1 small green cabbage finely chopped
  • 1 lb ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 cup grated cheese optional, choose your favorite type
  • Turkey bacon chopped, optional
  • Cooking spray or olive oil for baking

Instructions

Prepare the Cabbage

  • Start by finely chopping your green cabbage. You want the pieces small enough to mix well into the burger mixture, but still retain some texture. Place the chopped cabbage in a large bowl.

Mix the Burger Ingredients

  • Add the ground turkey or chicken to the bowl with the cabbage. Then, add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, and breadcrumbs. Crack the egg into the bowl, which will help bind all the ingredients together. Sprinkle in the paprika, salt, and black pepper. If you’re using grated cheese and chopped turkey bacon, add those now as well.

Combine Thoroughly

  • Using your hands or a spoon, mix everything together until well combined. Be gentle to avoid overworking the meat, which can make the burgers tough.

Shape the Patties

  • Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions. Shape each into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased with cooking spray or olive oil.

Bake the Burgers

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the patties for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even cooking. The burgers should be golden brown on the outside and reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

Serve

  • Serve your Oven Baked Cabbage Burgers on whole grain buns or lettuce wraps. Top with your favorite condiments and fresh veggies for a complete meal. These burgers also pair wonderfully with a side of roasted potatoes or a crisp salad.

Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Oven

Notes

  • Finely chopping the cabbage ensures it mixes well and cooks evenly in the burgers.
  • Don’t skip the egg; it is essential for binding the moist ingredients together.
  • For a crispier exterior, broil the burgers for the last 2-3 minutes of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  • Substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free options or ground oats for a gluten-free version.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check that burgers reach 165°F (74°C) to avoid undercooking or drying out.
