Ingredients

  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese cut into sticks (about 12 sticks)
  • 1 cup Takis chips crushed
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • cooking oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil works best)

Instructions

  • Begin by cutting the mozzarella cheese block into sticks, about 3 to 4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.
  • Place the Takis chips in a large resealable bag and crush them finely using a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy pan.
  • In three separate shallow bowls, place the flour in one, the beaten eggs in the second, and in the third combine the crushed Takis chips, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  • Lightly dredge each mozzarella stick in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, coating it fully. Finally, roll the stick in the Takis mixture, pressing gently to make sure the chips stick well. Repeat the egg and Takis coating one more time for extra crispiness.
  • Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 1 hour.
  • Heat the cooking oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the frozen mozzarella sticks in batches for 1 to 2 minutes or until the crust is golden and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the sticks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve your Takis-Crusted Mozzarella Sticks hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Equipment

  • Large resealable bag
  • Rolling pin or heavy pan
  • Three shallow bowls
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Deep pan or fryer
  • Slotted spoon

Notes

  • Freeze twice for an even crunchier crust by coating, freezing, then coating again before the final freeze.
  • Use fresh oil to ensure even frying and prevent unwanted flavors.
  • Do not skip freezing before frying to prevent cheese from leaking out.
  • Adjust spice levels by using milder Takis or reducing cayenne pepper.
  • Try baking at 425°F for 10 minutes as a lighter alternative.
