Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 6 cups chocolate frosting

Instructions

  • Step 1: Preheat the Oven - Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your cake will bake evenly.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Pans - Grease the two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or cooking spray and lightly dust them with flour.
  • Step 3: Mix the Dry Ingredients - In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk until well combined.
  • Step 4: Combine the Wet Ingredients - In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add in the hot coffee and stir gently to combine.
  • Step 5: Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients - Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, mix until just combined.
  • Step 6: Bake the Cake - Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Step 7: Cool the Cakes - Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes.
  • Step 8: Frost the Cake - Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the cake layers with chocolate frosting.
